Juan Sebastián Elcano Barco (1476 – 1526) was a Spanish explorer who completed the first circumnavigation of the world. He was born in Getaria, a town in the Basque Country of Spain, and became a sailor at a young age.
In 1519, Elcano joined Ferdinand Magellan's expedition to navigate a western route to the Spice Islands. After Magellan was killed during the expedition in the Philippines in 1521, Elcano was elected the new leader of the crew. He managed to bring the remaining ships of the expedition across the Indian Ocean, around the southern tip of South America, and back to Spain in 1522, completing the first journey around the world.
Elcano's achievement has been immortalized in Spanish and Basque folklore and history books. In his honor, the Spanish navy has named several of its ships "Juan Sebastián Elcano."
